Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches

First of all, Happy Friday everyone! Even though I don't have classes on this day, I had work. I work at this really cool office on campus. It's a work study job, which means I was poor enough to get the job. I only joke about that stuff, because financial aid is a pain in the ass. The upside about this job... My one boss loves good music, which means I get to actually have a fun time working. Not to mention, when you work for a place like this: www.ila-net.org you have to have a pretty awesome time. Did I mention I might be going to our conference in Chicago for free???

Now on with the cool stuff:

Since when did Coolio get his PhD??? Apparently, he's now an expect on relationships. Before we know it, Kanye West will have a diet book out.

File this one under world's trashiest couple. You can only hope that their sons are smarter than they are.

Poor Matt Damon Keeps Getting Pawned!

And Finally, just when I thought the hollywood couples curse was over, I was wrong! I thought whitney and bobby were untouchable in their craziness.

Now as for concerts... I'm rather thrilled to say that I managed to get a ticket to Thursday's Massive Attack gig at the 930 club (which is on the 28th). Their Friday show had already sold out (which doesn't matter much to me, I'm going to the beach that evening anyway) and apparently, this show is about gone. Hopefully, it's gonna be 46 bucks well spent! The last time Massive Attack played the 930 club was back in the Fall of 1998. The only reason why I know this is because I went to the 930 club for the first time when I was 13 in September of 1998. I remember getting a flyer for the M.A. Show when I was there. and Yes at that time, I did listen to their stuff. Mostly it was whatever songs my friends played on their electronic music radio show back home. What will make this show at the 930 club rather interesting is that opening act is fellow former WMUC dj Christine Moritz, who used to have her show Varity is the Spice of Life on our radio station. I wished I could have gotten to meet her while she was still a dj here. I am definately looking forward to this. I was a fan of her show and it's rare seeing a good female dj. I can only name a few good ones who spin vinyl still!

In my last entry, I wrote about Morrissey. As many of my friends know, I am obsessed with the whole Manchester scene and well any band that had that "madchester" sound. For the past day or two, I've been listening to the Happy Mondays a lot. They had a great energy. I won't lie though, I have only gotten into their music within the past 4 years or so. My older sister told me about them when she saw that I liked Blur and Oasis. A few years later, the movie 24 Hour Party People came out. Great movie, I highly recomend. (Steve Coogan is the man might I add.) It definately got me into their music. I think another reason I dig them is because they were the band who supposedly started rave culture! Supposed, "good" rave culture (the kind with the awesome warehouse parties) are coming back. shall we party like it's 1991???

For those who didn't know, Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays does guest vocals in the song "Dare" by the Gorrillaz. I must say that it's cool to see a "madchester" combination... (I consider Blur to have had the madchester sound at one time.)

While on the topic of Manchester and 24 Hour Party People...

Tony Wilson interviews the Smiths - I can't believe this interview actually happened. (On a side note, Andy Rourke of the smiths was djing in DC tonight, but I passed that up, because I was too tired.)

Keeping it real as always,
Megan

ps- thought for the weekend, since I'm a Journalism Student... Anderson Cooper is the hotness. I love how edgy he is with his reporting and well, you have to give kudos to a reporter who likes blasting the clash in his car.

Another Wednesday, another show

This week's playlist is quite interesting. a mixture of punk, new wave, disco, dance, rock and roll... I realize that I do repeat some songs. I'm trying to keep things fresh, but it gets tricky, especially since I only own so many albums and so many mp3s. It gets boring I hate to say it! Thank heavens Rohan walked in the middle of my show with the new Rapture and Scissor Sisters Albums. He really got the party going with some dancey stuff that rocked at the same time. I will probably do the station's review of the new Scissor Sisters. I'll make sure to write up something about it. I get the feeling I'll enjoy the album. Oh, by the way, Rohan picked out Madonna song of the week. If you want a particular Madonna song played, let me know ahead of time and I'll plan it out!

As for special of the week (I figured of just calling it that) I did a huge block of classic pop punk/emocore stuff. Mostly, it's from the early to mid 90's. I wanted to play music that I've been thinking about lately. Honestly, I've been listening to a lot of Jawbreaker. I think they are probably one of the most unrecognized bands from the early to mid 90s. They are the ghosts who should have been HUGE, but fate didn't have it that way. I also played Hot Rod Circuit, who almost recorded part of their album in my living room.

If you have any ideas to what I should feature, go ahead and post it! I'm all ears. I'm thinking of doing a slight tribute to old school Bryan Adams and doing a huge stack of alternative country. Hell, I might do a ska episode!

As for the rest of the show, I wasn't planning on going on today for Four hours! But I'm a sucker for djing. To leave, turn off the transmitter and not play stuff for the seven people listening online was just a bad idea. I love music too much to leave people hanging. Hell for sticking around, I got a request! Someone actually called the radio station and asked for ladytron. I hate to say it, but I don't like them much. I realized this after trying to find a song to play. Perhaps, this is proof to why I never got into electroclash stuff.

normally, there's only one link you would need to access the mp3 file of my show, but since I covered another show, there's another link to get if you're interested!

now keep in mind, the archive changes each wednesday. So to get this week's goods, you have to do it before the next time i'm on the air. i hope that makes sense!

So, I think next week, I'm going to go anti-keyboard, which means no synth pop exactly. it's kinda simular to my anti-guitar shows. Hopefully next week, I won't have to play for FOUR HOURS! you have to forgive me, i'm tired from today and i'm still a bit pissed that this dj didn't even call or email me! I feel right now like just playing punk, rock and roll, soul and things that just sound good.

Now for some other things... A good friend of mine who is also a DJ, has an awesome show you should check out. In the past six years i've known Chris Bro, he's introduced me to good stuff like David Gray and gave me a huge appreciation for stuff like Massive Attack (it wasn't that I didn't like them, I just didn't pay too much attention to why they're so fucking great! One day he told me to check out Blue Lines. enough said!) So go check out his radio show called NEXT. He plays new stuff that is pretty damn good. You can check it out online at 1071thepeak.com. The show happens Wednesday Nights at 11 pm and repeats Sunday Nights at 8 pm.

Looking at the clock I realize that it's time for me to go pass out... i mean go to bed. I have a 9:30 am class tomorrow morning. Tomorrow is Thursday which means my weekend is soon. (I don't have classes on Fridays. go ahead be jelous!)

Enclosing here is my current thought of the week: Tea with Morrissey... I figure me and him could discuss and mope over politics, literature, being alone, and how yummy shortbread cookies are. That's right Moz, everyday doesn't have to be Sunday.

Going Over Time

I'm still at the station even though technically my show is over. It's been over for about 13 minutes. why am i still here? The DJ who has a show after me isn't in yet. He usually calls to let me know he can't make it or is going to be late. This is quite odd. I have a feeling he forgot or something or is going to be here ASAP. If not, I guess that means I'm on the air until 2 pm, which means i have a lot of work to do before my 4:15 pm class. (oh yay)

right now, i got the synth pop going i suppose. well, it's more like new wave. I just did some New Order, She Wants Revenge and Depeche Mode. Now, it's talk talk with talk talk off of their album of the same name. Talk about a huge fucking tongue twisted!

I started the show late today. Tristian who has the show before mine covered for me, which was like 15 minutes. Not too shabby. In the middle of the show, Rohan (who is WMUC's music director and a good friend of mine) was a guest dj. we spun some rad stuff. I'm definately going to check out the new rapture and the new scissor sisters, because of him. Thank god for music directors or else, i'd be lost with new music i hate to say it. I think I'm going to write an essay someday about how it's harder to get into or find new music as you get older. It seems like a phenomena that happens to a lot of people.

I figured while i'm killing time, I'll list up and coming shows that are gonna be awesome. btw, this weekend i'll probably be making appearances at the 930 club and the black cat on saturday night! at the black cat, Right Round is happening, which is one of the best 80s dance pop parties. Dj Lil E plays it up and it's awesome. As for the 930 club, Bob Mould is djing Blow Off again. I'm debating on which to attend. Hell, I might go to both.

Okay now for the list of shows to check out:

It's taken me about an hour and a half to write this. Djing is a busy job when you're fetching albums and stuff. I only have 10 minutes left! YES! hurray. okay, i'm outta here!

taking it to the streets,
Megan

This is Planet Earth

Greetings and Welcome!

I am your host Megan. This blog is for my delightful radio show - The Alternative Breakfast Party from Hell, which is on University of Maryland's WMUC 88. 1 fm! Currently for the Fall Semester, I am on the air Wednesday Mornings from 10 am to 12 pm. you can listen either with a real radio (granted you would have to be in the college park area) or you can listen online at www.wmucradio.com If you miss the week's episode you can download or stream the show in our archive.

What can you expect?

Radio show wise, a good kick in the ass. Probably some of the best stuff you'll hear this week. The whole idea was to play dance music that rocks and rock and roll you can dance to! (ie- Prince, Depeche Mode, A Fire Inside, The Cult, INXS, She Wants Revenge, Head Automatica, Goldfrapp, Bronski Beat, Madonna, Motorhead... New Wave, Punk, Hip Hop, mixed with some surprises to say the least) but really, i play music that is good and stuff i wouldn't mind hearing on the radio more often.

Blog wise, a pop culture explosion. you can expect to see the current week's playlist, up coming concerts and releases i think everyone should check out, album reviews, commentary, things about wmuc radio, maybe some stories about my adventures in music journalism and links to anything i get published. Just like my radio show, anything goes. I might even try to take requests and do polls on this thing. I also am into getting some other music peeps on this as well. So i might have special guests on my show and on my blog (wouldn't that be rad!)

I just realized it's 3:15 am, which is t minus 7 hours and 45 minutes to my show. I value my sleep (of course because i'm a college student) so as i have my boys the alkaline trio playing ("Queen of Pain" i highly recomend this one kids), i'm calling it a night.

Keep it real,
Megan
