Dark music for a dark Wednesday

I keep meaning to update this each time I do a show. Someday I will get to that, so I don't ever fall behind in posting these playlists.

Here is a link to the playlist for Wednesday, October 17th's program:
http://wmucradio.com/station/playlists/display/4390

And now for this past week's show! I was late to my own show. I overslept because I was so exhausted from seeing Danzig the night before. My friend Eric, who is also a fellow WMUC Dj, and I went to see Danzig at Ramshead Live! in Baltimore. It was a lot of fun and a great way to get into the holiday spirit early....for Halloween! (Did you think I was going to say Christmas? This is Danzig kids!)

I only did a small set list for my radio show, but it's dark and fantastic. I wanted to play songs that were gothic in nature or rather bleak. It was a rainy morning and well Halloween is coming!

1 Sisters of Mercy - Lucreatia, My Reflection
2 Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities in Dust
3 She Wants Revenge - Walking Away
4 The Cult - Rain
5 Danzig - Mother *for Eric
6 AFI - Prayer Position
7 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Deanna
8 The Wallflowers featuring Elvis Costello - Murder 101
9 The Smiths - Panic
10 The Damned - Smash It Up
11 Echo and the Bunnymen - Do It Clean
12 The Cure - Charlotte Sometimes
13 Peter Murphy - Final Solution (Peru Ubu Cover)
14 Joy Division - She's Lost Control
15 Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down *for all my friends

As for this coming Wednesday, it's going to be Halloween! It's musical trick or treat. Not to mention, I'll play a few smiths and Morrissey songs since I am seeing him in Baltimore that evening! Please make sure to tune-in!

The Alternative Birthday Party from Hell?

I find it funny that my show was happening on my friend's birthday. I figured it would be cute to make this episode a "birthday party." I think I played a pretty good mixture of music. I mean though some parts had dance music, obviously, most of it wasn't for dancing. Some of the songs were direct messages to my friend. I approached things like as if it were a mix tape. Part of the fun with making a mix tape is that you throw on some good songs, some stuff that person likes, some stuff that you yourself like and things you think this person should hear. On top of that, you can put a few songs on there that have some sort of message. In a way, this was a mix tape birthday gift. I just hope my friend received my message loud and clear.

Here is the playlist:

1. Ryan Adams - To Be Young (is to be sad, is to be high)
2. The Cult - Wild Flower
3. Interpol - Narc
4. Tears for Fears - Head over Heels
5. INXS - Disappear
6. The Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
7. The Replacements - I'll Be You
8. Jawbreaker - West Bay Invitational
9. Hot Rod Circuit - The Power of Vitamins
10. The White Stripes - Fell in Love with a Girl
11. Joey Ramon - What a Wonderful World
12. Ben Lee - Birthday Song *for Spam
13. The Knife - Heartbeats (live at the BBC)
14. Stars - Elevator Love Letter
15. Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way
16. The Sugarcubes - Birthday
17. The Cure - Just Like Heaven
18. Goldfrapp - Number 1
19. Madonna - Holiday
20. Depeche Mode - World In My Eyes
21. Electronic - Disappointed
22. The Smiths - Boy With a Thorn in His Side
23. Elvis Costello - High Fidelity
24. The Clash - Train in Vain
25. She Wants Revenge - It's Just Begun

As for this coming Wednesday, I'm in the mood to play all sorts of stuff. I just saw Tiger Army at the Black Cat this past Friday (October 12th). The Static Age and Street Dogs were the opening acts. All three bands were awesome. I sometimes forget how much I love punk. Also, this coming Thursday, I'm seeing the Wallflowers (one of the first bands I was ever madly in love with) at the 9:30 Club. With that in mind, I figure it would be cool to play a few different genres or whatever. I just want to play good music that matters.

Now as for music you should check out- I recommend Bettye LaVette's new album The Scene of the Crime, Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger (though if you're reading this, I imagine you've been listening to this one since June), and She Wants Revenge - This is Forever.

I think that's it for now! Please tell all your friends about my radio show and make sure to tune in Wednesday morning 8 am to 10 am, est. Online at www.wmucradio.com

Take care,
Megan

And I'm Back!

I haven't been a good DJ. I'll admit that I lag behind in my postings. So sad, yet so true. I'm a busy college student though.

Now as for playlists, this one is from this past Wednesday. It's episode
number #5 for the semester. I think it's probably one of the better sets I've done in a while. It's a mixed bag of new sounds, old sounds, and good times. I tried playing recent singles from recent modern bands, but I also threw in some classic alternative things. I also played a few songs together that are if you think about it, together they're quite funny. (See The Divinyls and James to see what I'm refering to.)

1 REM - Don't Fall On Me
2 Kenna - Freetime
3 Ringside - Struggle
4 Modest Mouse - Dashboard
5 Le Tigre - Deceptacon
6 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen *requested by Dana
7 David Bowie - Modern Love
8 Sparks featuring Jane Wieldin - Cool Places
9 DEVO - Girl U Want *for Chris

24 James - Laid
25 The Smiths - This Charming Man
26 Sugarcubes - Motorcrash

As for next week, well this coming Wednesday's show (October 10th) I am throwing a "birthday" party for my friend Spam. That's his nickname for those who are wondering! He's a fellow radio comrad and he's a dear friend of mine and his real birthday is October 10th....Perfect timing, right?

With that in mind, I'm going to try to play songs that either mention birthdays in the lyrics or in the song title. It should be pretty cool. So far, I have songs by the sugarcubes and Ben Lee in mind. If you have any ideas, please feel free to share. You have up until Tuesday night to share those ideas, so get them to me fast!

I hope everyone has an awesome Monday and I hope you all can listen and check things out!

Party On,
Megan

ps- The radio show has a place on facebook! Just simply search for the group "The Alternative Breakfast Party from Hell" and you should fine me quite nicely!

Good Music is a part of a complete breakfast

Today's show was an absolute blast. I had a lot of fun just playing pretty much anything that I wanted to hear. anything that was played and it had a "theme" was totally coincidental and it wasn't like I forced myself to play nothing but dancable music. It was funny my mother called in and said "you're playing some really interesting music..." I have a feeling she didn't like the chemical brothers track I played, then again, I am not surprised.

I think the best irony of the show was the first song. Granted, I said that I didn't feel like playing dance music. Funny enough, I did play a few songs that you could dance to. The whole point of my show having the title it has is so I could get away with playing whatever I wanted. I don't like restricting myself to just one particular genre or idea. Honestly, I also got tired of repeating myself like I have been doing in recent shows. The good news is that the holidays are coming up soon and that means NEW MUSIC! Hopefully next semester will have more variety.

During my show, the Emergency Alert System went off. Lucky me, I had to do the monthly test. I just have to laugh that I wasn't trained very well in how to do that. The odds of the EAS going off during my shift are rare. I've been at the station for a year now and this was my first time doing a test. I'm proud to say that I survived doing that.

Here is this week's set list:

1. Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancin'
2. PJ Harvey - This is Love
3. Betty Lavette - Joy (Lucinda Williams Cover)
4. Sam and Dave - Soul Man
5. Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should Have Come Over
6. Ben Lee - Nothing Much Happens
7. INXS - Everything
8. Kylie Minogue - Slow
9. Blur - Park Life *for Thomas
10. Talking Heads - Take Me To The River
11. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Saturday Night (Bay City Rollers cover) *for Matt
12. Ringside - Struggle
13. Madonna - Secret
14. Duran Duran - Come Undone
15. Just Jack - Snowflakes (Cured by Temple of Jay Mix)
16. Head Automatica - Egyptian Musk
17. U2 - Numb
18. Chemical Brothers featuring Bernard Sumner - Out of Control
19. The Knife - Heartbeats (Live from the BBC)
20. Prince - Cream
21. Morrissey - Hairdresser on Fire *for Victor
22. Placebo - Bitter End
23. Feeder - Cement
24. Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger *for Rohan
25. The Cult - Rain
26. The Replacements - I'll Be You
27. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Straight to You

I only have three more shows left for the semester, which means last show is December 20th. I am right now in the works of planning the last three. So far, I am thinking of at least doing a show that would feature old school hip hop and 90s hip hop stuff. Rohan (my friend and wmuc's music director) will most likely co-host this with me. Another idea is to have a show in which I play the best stuff of the year. Well the stuff I think was the best of the year in terms of remixes, singles, albums, ect. I think one more idea that was pitched was to do a christmas special. If you have any ideas for my last three shows or have any requests, please feel free to share!

okay here's the link to listen to my show:

Missing Person...

I have been a bad journalist and dj by not posting on here like I should. But, I have good reasons... it's called school. Midterms and homework and now projects have been keeping me away from doing my writing. To catch up on any playlists that you've missed, here is the link to all of the playlists from this semester thus far:
http://wmucradio.com/station/shows/162

This week's show was a lot of fun, despite starting out a bit late. I jokingly refered to it as the alternative thanksgiving breakfast party from hell. (wow what a mouthful, right?) This week's show was also part tribute to the great late Michael Hutchence. His death was nine years ago on November 22nd. INXS was and still is a band that I hold dearly in my heart. Their music means a lot to me. Not to mention, Michael was the king of cool. I played a few of my favorite INXS songs. Granted, I played the more upbeat, happier ones. (yes inxs has some depressing songs)

Alright, here is the playlist:

1. INXS - Elegantly Wasted
2. Tears for Fears - Pale Shelter
3. The Bravery - No Breaks
4. U2 - Even Better Than the Real Thing
5. Echo and the Bunnymen - Lips Like Sugar
6. Goldfrapp - Ride a White Horse
7. Duran Duran - Planet Earth
8. INXS - Original Sin
9. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Blues from a Gun
10. The Knife - We Share Our Mother's Health
11. Bronski Beat - Small town Boy
12. Madonna - Borderline
13. Prince - Raspberry Beret
14. New Order - Guilt is a Useless Emotion
15. Electronic - Getting Away With It
16. Happy Mondays - Hallelujah
17. Stone Roses - Fools Gold
18. The Smiths - Sheila Take a Bow
19. INXS - New Sensation
20. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Deanna
21. Kylie Minogue - Love At First Sight
22. Pet Shop Boys - Domino Dancing
23. Information Society - What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)
24. Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence *Ewan Pearson Remix
25. The Cure - The Walk
26. The Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
27. The Pretenders - Middle of the Road
28. The Cult - Lil Devil
29. INXS - What You Need

here are the links to listen to this week's show:
as I said I started my show late. The first part of the mp3 (up until the 28th minute) is Tristian. He's a good dj might I add. After that, it's all of my show. The show goes onto a second mp3 file. My show ends around the 40 minute mark on the second file. Enjoy!
